How to Pray the Holy Rosary

A complete step-by-step guide with the full text of every prayer — from the Sign of the Cross to the Hail Holy Queen.

The Holy Rosary is one of the most beautiful and powerful prayers in the Catholic tradition. Although it may seem complex at first, its structure is straightforward once learned. This guide walks you through every step, with every word of every prayer written out in full.

What You Will Need

All you need is a set of rosary beads and a few quiet minutes. If you don't have physical beads yet, our free interactive rosary tool guides you through every prayer on screen. The rosary itself consists of a crucifix, an introductory section (the "tail"), a center medal, and five groups of ten beads (called decades) arranged in a circle.

When to Pray — The Daily Mysteries

There are four sets of mysteries, each meditating on different events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. The Church traditionally assigns each set to specific days of the week:

Step 1 — Sign of the Cross and Apostles' Creed

Hold the crucifix in your right hand. Make the Sign of the Cross — touching your forehead, chest, left shoulder, and right shoulder — saying: "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen."

Then pray the Apostles' Creed, which professes the foundational beliefs of the Christian faith:

APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Step 2 — Opening Prayers on the Tail Beads

Still on the tail section of the rosary, pray one Our Father on the single large bead:

OUR FATHER
Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Then pray three Hail Marys on the three small beads — one for an increase of faith, one for hope, and one for charity:

HAIL MARY (× 3)
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Conclude the opening with the Glory Be:

GLORY BE
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Step 3 — Announce the First Mystery

You are now at the center medal, which marks the beginning of the circular part of the rosary. Here you announce the first Mystery of the set for that day and spend a moment in silent meditation, imagining the scene in your mind. Then pray one Our Father on the first large bead of the circle.

Step 4 — Pray Ten Hail Marys (One Decade)

On each of the ten small beads that follow, pray one Hail Mary while meditating on the announced mystery. Do not rush — allow the repetitive prayer to quiet your mind and carry you into a spirit of contemplation.

Step 5 — Glory Be and Fatima Prayer

After the tenth Hail Mary of each decade, pray the Glory Be and then the Fatima Prayer, which Our Lady of Fátima requested in 1917:

FATIMA PRAYER
O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell. Lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Amen.

Step 6 — Repeat for All Five Decades

Return to Step 3 and repeat for the remaining four mysteries. Each decade follows the same pattern: announce the mystery → Our Father → 10 Hail Marys → Glory Be → Fatima Prayer.

Step 7 — Conclude with the Hail Holy Queen

After the fifth decade, you arrive back at the center medal. Here you conclude the Rosary with the Hail Holy Queen:

HAIL HOLY QUEEN (SALVE REGINA)
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Follow this with the closing prayer: "V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ." You may also add personal prayers and intentions at this point.
