About the Assumption of Mary Novena
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the dogma that at the end of her earthly life, Mary was taken up body and soul into the glory of Heaven. Pope Pius XII solemnly defined this dogma on November 1, 1950 — one of only two dogmas defined under papal infallibility since the First Vatican Council.
August 15 has been celebrated as the feast of Mary's passing (Dormition) since at least the 6th century. The Emperor Maurice made it a feast of the universal Church around 600 AD. In both Eastern and Western Christianity, it is one of the greatest Marian feasts of the year.
The Assumption is a sign of hope for all Christians: what happened to Mary at the end of her life — body and soul reunited in glory — will happen to all the faithful at the resurrection. She is the first fruits of the resurrection, the model of what we are all called to become.
August 15 is a Holy Day of Obligation in most of the world. It is also the traditional start date for the 54-Day Rosary Novena.

O Glorious Mother of God, on this day when the Church celebrates your glorious Assumption into Heaven, we come to you with faith and love.
You who were taken up body and soul into the glory of your Son — intercede for us who still walk the road of this life. Help us to fix our eyes on Heaven, as you now enjoy it in its fullness.
Mary, assumed into Heaven, pray for us who struggle, who suffer, who doubt. Obtain for us the grace to love God above all things, to persevere until the end, and to join you one day in the glory of eternal life.
