What is a Marian Novena?

A novena is nine consecutive days of prayer. The word comes from the Latin novem, meaning nine — recalling the nine days the Apostles and Mary prayed together in the Upper Room between the Ascension and Pentecost (Acts 1:14). That first novena ended with the coming of the Holy Spirit.

A Marian novena is nine days of prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary, asking for her intercession before God. Catholics believe Mary, as the Mother of Jesus, has a unique power of intercession — that her prayers on our behalf are heard in a special way by her Son.

Many Marian novenas are timed so that the ninth and final day falls on a feast day of Our Lady — making the feast itself the culmination and answer of the novena. This is why each novena on this page has a specific start date.
