About the Immaculate Heart of Mary Novena
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary has roots in the 17th century with Saint John Eudes, but it was brought to the whole Church through the apparitions at Fatima (1917), where Our Lady asked for consecration to her Immaculate Heart as a path to world peace.
Pope Pius XII consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1942, and in 1944 established the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the universal Church. The feast is celebrated on the Saturday after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus — a day after the greatest feast of the Lord's Heart, as a reminder that Mary's heart is always oriented to her Son.
Saint Louis de Montfort, Saint Maximilian Kolbe, and Saint John Paul II all had profound devotions to the Immaculate Heart. John Paul II attributed his survival of the 1981 assassination attempt to Our Lady's intercession, and he personally consecrated Russia to her Immaculate Heart.
