About the Our Lady of Sorrows Novena

NOVENA STARTSSeptember 6
DAY 9 / FEAST NEXT DAYSeptember 14 / September 15
INTENTIONcomfort in suffering, consolation, union with Christ’s Passion

Our Lady of Sorrows honours Mary’s share in the suffering of her Son, from the prophecy of Simeon at the Presentation to the burial of Jesus. The Servite Order, founded in the 13th century, did much to spread the devotion to her Seven Sorrows.

The seven sorrows are: the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the child Jesus in the Temple, meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, the Crucifixion, the taking down of Jesus from the Cross, and His burial.

The memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows is September 15, the day after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This novena finishes on September 14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

🙏 Novena Prayer: Our Lady of Sorrows

Mother of Sorrows, you stood beneath the Cross and did not leave your Son. Stand beside me in my own sorrows and teach me to carry them with faith.

By the sword that pierced your heart, obtain for me the grace to hate sin, to love Jesus crucified, and to trust that suffering offered to God is never wasted.

(Mention your intention here)

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us. Amen.

"Mention your intention here" — speak it aloud or hold it silently in your heart. Our Lady hears.

Pray this prayer once each day for nine consecutive days, beginning on September 6.
